About Me
Hello to prospective students ~ and parents of students! I've taught Piano nearly 25 years, and Voice the last 15 years. I have a successful "way with kids" (teens and adults welcome too)! I love getting to know the uniqueness of every student and gearing teaching toward that student, while still honoring and teaching the important fundamentals of music. IMPORTANT for children and all beginners to get accurate technical training and useful knowledge from the beginning-which will aid them in their learning and later involvement in music!

What to expect in my Keyboard and Piano Lessons

Beginner - Intermediate - Advanced

Thorough, enjoyable training for you, especially to play or sing with feeling and imagination, then music has more meaning for the student and those listening to the performer. Technique is important, esp. to avoid injury and to learn to handle challenging passages of music. Understanding music's theory: the science of music is presented in a fun way: melody, harmony, chord systems, intervals, patterns, and other theory; dynamics, technique, and more. Reading music is taught with "tricks and tools" to make it easier, even a fun journey learning two "new languages": Treble and Bass-their melodies, intervals, harmonies! Overall, an "Interdisciplinary Approach" To be discussed! I encourage students to think on their own about music and music fundamentals. Then I explain further as necessary. I also encourage creativity, e.g., composing, even simply at the very beginner level. Consistent practice is encouraged--short (or longer) times most weekdays (and one weekend day, if possible). To be discussed with each student! I nurture the love of music, so most students practice without being forced by a parent or by themselves. Practice should be fulfilling! This is for both Vocal and Piano study. Taylor-Robinson has it right: "playing from the heart" is the essential language of music. If we don't have that, we don't really have "authentic" music! From the beginning, we explore feelings and how to "shade" music so that the music and you truly artistically communicate! Thank you for your interest and I look forward to meeting you! Julieanna.

What to expect in my Vocal Lessons

Beginner - Intermediate - Advanced

Adamant support for your particular interest in singing and vocal usage is the first consideration. Next, I learn what styles you wish to sing-and your favorites. Also, do you have any "muses"--favorite singers you've been inspired by? And are you open to classical and classical fundamentals--which assist in singing most any style? We work on breath (& learn a few Yogic tricks to aid your singing; work on posture, gestures, relaxation; getting out of "nose singing" and into full-body expression. Then, what is your vocal range; we may work on expanding your range and getting through "breaking points" in the voice. With enjoyable songs (of your choosing and my suggestions), we look for accurate pitch, connectedness (legato) and separateness or punctuated phrases (staccatos, etc.), general expression, meaning, and love for the song. If you love the song and capture its true meaning, you'll sing better! Vocal warmups are handy but I don't overdo on them; too much "technique" with the naturalness of singing can "tighten" your expression and interrupt your natural ability. But some fun warmups and technical tools are explored and handy. We make better the quality of your voice and its crooning! All ages, levels, we make your singing better! Dramatic considerations and stage presence are explored. Dear "Songbird", what is it you want to say through song? I look forward to meeting you! :) Julieanna-P.S.: I can help with oral interpretation of literature or with your speech-making, as well--not unrelated to knowledge of good singing!

Review:

Julieanna brought out the best in my shy daughter!

"We were looking for a good piano and vocals teacher for my 7-year-old daughter Aria. Being a very shy child, we were a little concerned if she would feel comfortable enough to respond to instruction. Julieanna started teaching Aria piano and voice, and it proved to be wonderful; Aria very much responded to instruction! Julieanna has the knack to teach children and make it fun. She has simple tips to help children remember music basics. She also makes sure the student gets concepts related not just to musical notes but also to rhythm--feeling and accurately reading rhythms too-a very important part of the music learning process. Julieanna has many years of experience teaching piano and vocals and one can see it in the way she teaches. I highly recommend her for any music coaching needs you may have." Best, Rohit J [He's stated that for anyone needing to talk to him re his daughter's experience with Julieanna, he'd provide his phone number. Please ask teacher Julieanna if you wish that info.!] Julieanna Thompson wrote on Sun, 21 May 2023
