Sonjia U.

Sonjia was born and raised in the small, southwestern town of Alamogordo, New Mexico. While completing her studies in Music Education at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, New Mexico, she took on the challenge of developing a choral music program at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic School. What started with 12 eager students in 1988 blossomed over a two year period into a strong, competitive choral program that continues to thrive today. She has performed in show choirs, performance choirs, operas, musicals, and jazz choirs both in high school and college. She had the privilege of performing Mozart's Requiem in Lincoln Center with a national collegiate choir. Since 1990, Sonjia has taught choral music at the middle and high school levels, training a cappella, performance, jazz, and competitive choirs. She has been a church accompanist since the age of 13 and currently serves as the head accompanist for Southside Baptist Ministries in south Richmond. Sonjia is a piano, voice, and music theory instructor with her own studio, Sacred Beginnings, and her love for teaching and performing is translated into her students. She composes and arranges music and her heart's desire is to tap into the undiscovered talent each child has and use it to help them develop strength and confidence that will translate into success across all areas of their lives!
