About Me

Originally from Long Island, NY, I began learning the guitar taking private lessons at 10 yrs old. I became active in my high school jazz band and at the age of 16 started playing professionally in bands, which continued for the next 40 years. I've studied under many wonderful guitar instructors in several styles of music, primarily focusing on jazz studies, though I enjoy playing several musical styles. I also have over 30 years experience as a professional guitar instructor, actively teaching lessons in Henry County, GA as well as Clayton County, GA since the early 80's. I had actually started teaching friends as a teenager in the 70's for fun and extra money while in high school and I'm happy to say that those early students are still playing guitar to this day. Over the years I've had the pleasure of teaching hundreds of students at every skill level and today I maintain a fun and very active teaching schedule.

Jim C has over 40 years of music experience in the McDonough area.

Jim C is proficient in and teaches Guitar Lessons .

What to expect in my Guitar Lessons

Beginner - Intermediate - Advanced

I endeavor to make guitar lessons fun, practical and productive!!! Whether you’re a beginner, intermediate, advanced, a musically frustrated novice or even a professional level musician needing to deepen their musical knowledge, I can help you. I teach every student according to the unique way they learn. I cover the musical basics so that the student has a good understanding from which to function from. As the student progresses, I teach more advanced concepts. Every student has their own goals for the guitar. I tailor each lesson in such a way that the student will get important musical essentials down in a short period of time and then get them moving toward their goals. For those who are advanced, I’ll help you sharpen the skills you have and I’ll raise the bar to help you do more than you knew you could. Many of my students have become excellent players. Some have gone on to earn a college degree in music, some have gone on to teach guitar successfully, others have pursued careers in music, some have gone on to use their playing skills in church musical ministries, and many are enjoying the guitar as a fulfilling hobby or a part-time source of income in bands or musical projects.

Formal Education:

I've been involved in jazz band all during my school years. After moving to GA, I attended Georgia State University. I studied with guitar teachers all during my school years and a few years into my adult years. By then I had already studied with several teachers (10 or 11 instructors) as well as quite a bit of self-study.

Private Education:

Most of my study had been with private teachers and a lot of self-study in music theory books as well as many instructional resources. The main teachers I studied under follows:  Jazz Guitar / Jazz Standards, Oct 1991-Sep 1992 with Bob Shaw (Atlanta, GA).    Advanced Jazz Guitar Stylings, Apr 1985-Sep 1985 with Eric Domas (College Park, GA).  Western Swing & Country Guitar, Mar 1980-Jul 1980 with Dan Hutchings (Ventura, CA).    Jazz Guitar, Sep 1978-Jan 1980 with Jazz Guitarist Tony Campo (Copaigue, NY).     Jazz Guitar, Music Theory, May 1976-Aug 1978 with Charlie LaVerne (Islip, NY).     Classical Guitar, Jun 1975-Apr 1976 with Robert Bates (Lindenhurst, NY).     Beginning-Advanced Guitar, Sep 1970-May 1975 with Jimmy Nelis (Lindenhurst, NY).

Performing Experience:

I performed in several bands and in different musical formats in NY, Los Angeles, Tampa, and Atlanta. This included top 40 bands with horns, dance bands (during the disco craze), several rock bands, a jazz trio and a jazz quartet, a smooth jazz group, a latin-jazz band with a former member of Santana, a couple of country bands, wedding bands and church worship ensembles. I had also performed as a soloist and as an accompanist for a singer. These days I am playing primarily in a church group on Sunday mornings since my teaching schedule is quite active.

Experience Teaching:

Private Guitar Instruction in my home studio (McDonough, GA), Feb 2009-Present.   Guitar Instructor at independent music store (Stockbridge, GA), Sep 2007-Present.   Guitar Instructor for Tara Music Center (Jonesboro, GA), May 1983-Aug 2009. I was the primary guitar instructor at this location for over 20 years until the owner retired and closed their store.
