Carlos S (Write Review) Miami, FL
I have played several instruments since the third grade. I started singing and playing piano in 3rd grade, trumpet, french horn and clarinet in 4th grade, viola in 7th grade, and percussion in 10th. While I still have the ability to play all of the instruments above, my studies have largely been focused in vocal/choral, viola, and piano. In high school, I participated in numerous ensembles including district, region, and state honors choir, as well as chamber choir, jazz chorale, honor choir, and chamber strings at my school. I performed in numerous musicals as well, including Anything Goes, 42nd Street, and Ragtime.
During my undergraduate career at West Chester University of Pennsylvania, I was a viola performance major for 3 semesters before switching to voice with a minor in piano. My teachers were Sylvia Ahramjian (Viola), Dr. Emily Bullock (Voice), and Dr. Robert Bedford (Piano). While studying viola performance, I was prinipal of the symphony and chamber orchestras, as well as a member of a string quartet. While studying voice, I was a principal in the opera company for two semesters, playing the roles of Don Alfonso in Cosi Fan Tutte and Cereberus in Orpheus in the Underworld. My main area of focus was vocal pedagogy, where I learned how to diagnose tension and other common issues with the voice, and learned how to implement effective strategies to correct these problems.
