Dallas has a long-running and ever-changing musical history. The downtown neighborhood of Deep Ellum came about in the late1800s as part of a huge blues movement, producing such influential acts as Blind Lemon Jefferson, T-Bone Walker, Lead Belly, and the incomparable master Robert Johnson. While Deep Ellum has seen a recent resurgence as a popular area for the music entertainment industry, love and celebration of music has spread throughout all of Dallas and its many suburbs over the years.
Dallas is home to a wide variety of music venues, ranging widely in both styles of music (hip-hop and R&B, indie rock, country, electronic, whatever you’re looking for) as well as size, with hole-in-the-wall bars and clubs, intimate converted venues such as the Kessler and Granada Theater, mid-range venues like Trees, the Southside Ballroom, and even gigantic stadium venues such as Nokia theater, the American Airlines Center, and Gexa Energy Pavilion.
Dallas’ music scene has retained its local flavor and relevance with more modern acts like ‘psychobilly’ pioneer Reverend Horton Heat, Erykah Badu, the Old 97’s, indie rock staple Toadies, and metal kings Pantera. Denton, a northern satellite of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, boasts its own odd Austin-like vibe as a ‘music town’ with a strong local music scene that exists firmly on its own but also contributes directly to Dallas’ own scene.
