Derek began playing music at the age of six. Over the years, he developed his skills further by learning music theory, composition, and production. He gained performance experience in the Phoenix area by playing at venues such as The Marquee and Crescent Ballroom and with acts such as Soul Asylum and The Wailers. Though Derek can teach many different genres of music, his musical personal favorite is classic rock/blues, which had great influence on his style of playing. Derek loves music because it's a gift that will always be there, and loves teaching music because it's a magical feeling to watch a student progress.
