Hello, my name is Austin, and I play horn. I'm currently in the process of finishing my degree in Music Education from UNT, and I'm looking to teach a handful of dedicated Horn or Trumpet students looking to take their playing to the next level. Whether you're looking to audition into a music program or just looking to climb a handful of chairs in your school band, I can help guide you into the confident and able musician that you're meant to be. I play on a 1979 King Eroica with an Engelbert Schmid 9 mouthpiece.

- Intermediate
I believe in a strong focus on fundamentals, both technical and intellectual. Students will learn the history of their art, the theory at work in their music, and a strong methodology to prepare them for great performances in a variety of settings. Students will begin by developing a routine of workable fundamental exercises that will become the core of their practice. These exercises will promote technical and muscular development and facilitate being able to approach difficult literature for their instrument. As the student develops, literature and studies will be added on top of the core of fundamental exercises, and this can include anything from audition excerpts to region music for UIL.
Formal Education:
I attended high school in Central IL before moving to Denton to attend UNT for Music Education. I've played trumpet since grade school, and picked up horn in high school.
Private Education:
I began taking horn lessons in high school from Dr. David Vroman of Bradley University in Peoria, IL. He guided me through learning the instrument, preparing for solo contests, and ultimately preparing me for auditioning into a premier music program at UNT. After I got to UNT, I studied under a handful of doctoral students who helped me push my playing to a level where I felt confident in continuing my relationship with my instrument on my own.
Performing Experience:
I've performed in school bands my whole life. My most notable performing experiences came from times where I had an opportunity to expand my horizons as a musician. In high school, I played in my local youth orchestra, and was exposed to symphonic literature in a way that looking at excerpts just can't prepare an aspiring hornist for. Since coming to UNT, I've performed high level solo literature for the horn in a jury setting, picked up the trumpet again to play in a big band setting, and performed in Latin percussion groups.
Experience Teaching:
I don't have much experience teaching outside of the context of working with my section in school bands, but I'm enthusiastic about the prospect of taking in a dedicated handful of students to mutually develop with.
