About Me

Hi, my name is Jonathan, however, I usually go by Jon. I was born and raised in California, and moved to Ohio in 2006. One of my favorite things about music is the way that you can express yourself in so many more ways than with just words. I have been teaching music for more than 21 years, and my favorite part of teaching is seeing a student excited over learning something new, and/or being able to do something that they have been working on. I have been happily married since 1994, and have twin sons. They are both involved in music as well, but from different aspects. Kyle is a musician like me. I have taught him drums and guitar, and he plays in my church praise band. Spencer works on the other side of the stage as an audio/video engineer, running the sound and video projector at my church. When I am not teaching, performing, or practicing, I spend time with my dog Lucy, and my family. I also like to create visual art in my spare time.

Jonathan Sh. has over 21 years of music experience in the University Heights area.

Jonathan Sh. is proficient in and teaches Drum Lessons, Keyboard and Piano Lessons, Vocal Lessons, Song Writing Lessons, Orchestral Lessons .

What to expect in my Song Writing Lessons

Beginner - Intermediate

Students will begin creating music immediately. Within the first lesson, they will have access to free, technology that will be able to help them. They will learn the different parts of a song, and how those parts should be used. They will also have a "beginners formula" on how to write lyrics. They will not need to have any music theory background to create a song, however, this is something that we can explore and learn about. They also don't need to play an instrument, however, this is a skill that would be helpful. I am a laid back, easy going guy, and I want students to feel comfortable with making mistakes, because "Mistakes are what teach us. If we do everything right the first time, we have't really learned anything, we are just doing what we already know how to do."-Aaron Copland

What to expect in my Vocal Lessons

Beginner - Intermediate - Advanced

Students should expect to begin singing immediately. Within the first lesson, we will explore their vocal range, give them exercises, to help them increase this range, teach them how to choose a song as well as what key that song should be in. They will leave with 2 song to work on, 1 that I have chosen, and what they they have chosen. I am a laid back, easy going guy, and I want students to feel comfortable with making mistakes, because "Mistakes are what teach us. If we do everything right the first time, we have't really learned anything, we are just doing what we already know how to do."-Aaron Copland

What to expect in my Drum Lessons

Beginner - Intermediate - Advanced

Students will begin playing immediately. I will give them the tools that they need, within the first 5 minutes, to start a simple rock rhythm. This is what we will use as the foundation for everything else we do. In the first lesson, they will be able to play simple phrases, with fills, and they will be able to play with another instrument (like you would have to in a band.) I am a laid back, easy going guy, and I want students to feel comfortable with making mistakes, because "Mistakes are what teach us. If we do everything right the first time, we have't really learned anything, we are just doing what we already know how to do."-Aaron Copland

Formal Education:

I obtained my bachelors degree in music education (with a concentration on songwriting and composition) at Fresno Pacific University in Fresno, California. I then taught music for several years before completing my Masters of Music Education at Boston University working both online and at the school.

Private Education:

At the age of 2 my parents had me singing and performing on stage. I have continued singing even to this day, taking lessons from Dr. Roy Klaussen, Dr. Legrand Andersen, and Dr. Debora Winger. At the age of 4 I started piano lessons, my 1st teacher being my mother. I continued with piano lesson off and on until I was 12. At that time I was very interested in jazz and blues, and could not find a teacher near where I lived that could teach me these styles, so I started reading, listening, and experimenting in order to teach myself. At the age of 5 I started teaching myself how to play drums, and still do to this day. In 5th grade I started playing trumpet, and became interested in being a band director. In high school and college, I took classes for each of the band instruments in order to learn how to play them well. Since then, I have continued to play (and teach privately) trumpet, clarinet, flute, and trombone.

Performing Experience:

I was very young when I started performing. In fact I do not remember a time when I was not on a stage at least once a week. When I was 8 years old I became the church drummer and when I was 15 I was in my first paying band that traveled around California playing in many different venues. When I turned 18 I started singing in a Jazz quartet called No Parking where we performed at weddings, birthdays, and other such private events. Since I moved to Ohio I played drums in an alternative band called Off Track playing mostly originals. I then started playing keyboards and singing in a band called 4 Guys and a Girl. We played almost every weekend at clubs and fraternity halls all over North East Ohio. We performed hits from the 50s-90s. Currently I am the leader of my praise band at church playing contemporary christian music as well as originals.

Experience Teaching:

I have been teaching music in the public school system for over 21 years. I started teaching band, choir, and general music at Washington Colony School in Fresno, California. When I moved to Ohio, I started teaching for Constellation schools where I taught, choir, general music, band, orchestra, theater arts, and song writing. I worked at CMSD for a time and then moved on to other charter schools. I currently teach at Citizens Academy East, a Breakthrough School on the east side of Cleveland. During this time I have taught private lessons in the following areas: voice, piano, drums, bass guitar, trumpet, clarinet, flute, trombone, and guitar.
