Being a person born and raised in Philadelphia, I've been exposed to some of the greatest musicians and music this city has to offer. It's one of the reasons I enjoy playing drums. Another part of my love is the other music I grew to love throughout my life. I first started playing drums when I 10 and I learned majority by ear. Playing songs by artists like Maroon 5, Breaking Benjamin, Jill Scott, The Temptations and more gave me a diverse range of musical styles to draw from and understand. While in college I explored more of jazz, Brazilian, Latin, hip hop and fusion that ultimately became the basis for how I play. My teaching style is "Sectional" First I have a brief conversation with my student to understand their background with drums and how much they know about the instrument. We then spend a few lessons learning the basics of drumming hand technique, proper posture, breathing technique. Then learning, grooves, fills, soloing, understanding song structure etc. I want my students to understand that drums is not only an instrument but a voice for the music, themselves and for others listening and how this voice can be used in different varieties of music.
