John began taking traditional piano lessons at the age of 9. Soon, he began entering and winning classical piano competitions with exceptional mentions in dynamics and expression. Soon, John became interested in more modern composers such as George Winston and Aaron Copeland. By the age of 15, John began entering and winning various competitions for composition. One of which he represented the state of Georgia for his age group and winning honorable mention.
In high school, John expanded his musical knowledge to brass and percussion. John was selected to perform around the country playing the contrabass bugle in Drum Corps International. In college, John studied piano, Composition, and brass. His love for modern composition and improv led him to playing in various touring rock bands.
Now, based in Athens, John not only is in a internationally touring rock band, he is also a session musician as well as a piano instructor.
"I enjoy teaching people how to play from the heart. This makes my job easy and fun. My method of teaching is expanding on what is fun and intriguing for the student.. i.e.. a popular song that they want to learn. While doing this, I explain the basic knowledge that is required for future artistic expression. Therefore, it is fun and extremely educational. I have many years of professional experience performance, patience, and people skills. I work well with students of all ages."
