About Me
Hi, my name is Jaylin and I am a vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, producer & engineer from Richmond, VA. I have been a student of music for 18 years. My musical influences include Alicia Keys, Jessye Norman, Jill Scott, James Morrison, and so many more. I also enjoy jazz singers like Samara Joy, Billie Holiday, and Ella Fitzgerald. My teaching style can best be described as student-focused, prioritizing the desired outcome of each individual. My teaching philosophy can best be described by saying that all students of music should have the capability and freedom to express themselves through music in a way that is healing. In my lessons, you can expect to learn vocal pedagogy and understand how the voice works and how to optimize the voice as an instrument, unique perspectives on individual voices and how to find desired tones, songwriting techniques to help individuals connect to their music, performance techniques for self accompanying vocalists, production and engineering techniques for self-recording vocalists, DAW operation, and industry tips and advice for aspiring music professionals. I like to tell my students that they are the priority. Whatever their goal is, we work towards. My favorite thing about teaching is the moment when a student connects the lesson to their life. My favorite performance was the final concert in my master's program at Berklee College of Music, when I performed my original song for an audience of friends family and faculty. I primarily teach voice, songwriting, and production, but I can also teach guitar and music theory. My approach as a teacher is to create an open space to allow students to genuinely and emotionally feel their way through the music they aspire to create. Thanks for taking a look at my profile. Hope to meet you soon!
