River began playing cello and singing in elementary school, refining her skills through membership in school orchestras and choirs. She earned her B.A. in Music from the University of Texas at Austin, where she was a member of many ensembles including the UT Symphony Orchestra, Butler Opera Center, Bereket Middle Eastern Ensemble, and SoundProof. Though River teaches and performs across many genres of music including pop, electronic, and classical, her greatest musical loves and influences are 20th-century composers like Shostakovich, and modern experimental pop artists like Julia Holter and Fiona Apple.
