Jamal began playing guitar at the age of 5. Over the years, he developed his skills by practicing and playing at church and with friends. He gained performance experience in Charlottesville VA by playing at Trax and with acts such as The Dave Matthews Band. Though Jamal can teach many different genres of music, his musical personal favorites are Rock, Blues, Pop, and Jazz which had great influence on his style of playing. Jamal loves music because it is a way to communicate. He loves teaching music because developing creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork are important. I began on Banjo as a child, learning from Uncle Homer Walker from Giles County, VA. I also studied Blues with Nat Reese Sr. of Princeton, WV. I studied Music Theory privately with Dr. Roland Wiggins.
Performing Experience:
I was a touring professional Guitarist for over 15 years. I have been on tours as part of the opening act for B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Tracy Chapman, and the Dave Matthews Band.
Experience Teaching:
I have been teaching Guitar, Music History, and Music Theory for 30+ years both privately and as Adjunct Professor at Piedmont Virginia Community College (2)
