About Me
Hi, I'm Josh from Riverview. My musical journey started in the Athens, GA music scene in the late 1990s. I've studied music for over 15 years, playing bass, guitar, and dobro in punk and bluegrass bands, and in various settings including ski resort towns and modern worship teams. My musical interests include classic rock, surf, country, and jazz standards. My teaching style is structured. My teaching philosophy is that understanding music theory unlocks musical freedom. In my lessons, expect to learn a digestible approach to music theory and guitar neck navigation. I tell students consistent practice is key. My favorite thing about teaching is seeing students connect theory to playing. Some of my favorite performances have been busking and engaging with the audience. Students appreciate my clear explanations and practical strategies. I primarily teach guitar, but also bass and dobro. My approach is to empower students with musical understanding. Thanks for looking at my profile. Hope to meet you soon!

What to expect in my Guitar Lessons

Beginner - Intermediate

a beginner guitar student can expect to start with the fundamentals, including learning the parts of the guitar, how to tune it, basic strumming techniques, and how to play simple melodies and chords. They will build a foundation in basic music theory, learning notes on the E, A, and D strings, and how to play open chords like Em, Am, C, G, and D. The focus is on developing basic technique, understanding rhythm, and playing simple songs to build confidence and familiarity with the instrument. An intermediate guitar student will expand on these fundamentals, delving into more complex scales like the major and pentatonic scales, and learning additional chords, including major chords in different positions. They will also be introduced to blues progressions, the CAGED system, and begin to explore modes, gaining a deeper understanding of music theory and how it applies to the guitar. The emphasis shifts towards developing a more comprehensive understanding of the fretboard, chord relationships, and applying these concepts to playing a wider variety of musical styles.
