Hailed as “a master of his touching, yet bold baritone” (Berkshire Fine Arts), Matthewis an emerging force in the opera world, captivating audiences at esteemed houses across the United States and Europe. A Brooklyn native, he honed his craft with degrees and accolades from SUNY Purchase, Mannes College, and the Yale School of Music, establishing a foundation for a career marked by versatility and artistry. Matthew’s rise gained momentum with a 2019 Opera Foundation Scholarship win, paving the way for his European debut as part of the Stipendiat Ensemble at Deutsche Oper Berlin. There, he brought depth to roles including Dancairo (Carmen), Fiorello (Il barbiere di Siviglia), and the Imperial Commissioner (Madama Butterfly), while also starring as the baritone soloist in the world premiere of Once To Be Realised, which toured Berlin, Munich, and Athens in 2021. His international journey continued in 2024 with a French debut at Opéra Orchestre National Montpellier, where he portrayed Bassidji in Keyvan Chemirani’s Négar. A celebrated competitor, Matthew claimed the 2022 Sullivan Award from the Sullivan Foundation, a 2023 Role Preparation Grant, and top honors in contests like Opera Birmingham (3rd Place), Premiere Opera, Opera Index, and the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition (Regional Winner). In 2025, he further solidified his reputation as a finalist in both the Opera Tampa Competition and the prestigious Luciano Pavarotti Competition, underscoring his place among opera’s rising stars. His artistry has been refined through Young Artist Programs at Florida Grand Opera, Central City Opera, Chautauqua Opera, Opera Naples, and Music Academy of the West. This season, Matthew steps into iconic roles, debuting as Dr. Malatesta (Don Pasquale), Marcello (La Bohème), and Ko-Ko (The Mikado) with Opera Naples, and delivering a commanding Figaro (Il barbiere di Siviglia) with Opera in the Pines.
