About Me

Hi, my name is Mikiyah and I am a singer from Baton Rouge, LA. I have been a student of music for 21 years. My musical influences include Etta Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Jekaylyn Carr, Tasha cobbs, Tamela Mann, any and all Gospel and Musical Theatre. and I also enjoy Neo-Soul and R&B. My teaching style can best be described as standing on business but have fun at the same time. My teaching philosophy can best be described by saying that I know it can be rough but the more sit and the more you practice and listen, the better you will become. In my lessons, you can expect to learn different styles of singing, runs, breathe control, your range, and properly picking a song that best suites your voice. I like to tell my students to be vulnerable, be themselves, and have a wide range in music tastes that I can even learn something. My favorite thing about teaching is seeing the progress that my students have made and seeing them happy with it as well. My favorite performance was when I was in high school and played Sylvia in All Shook Up the Musical and got nominated for Best Supporting Actress for the Schmidt and Jones Awards In Dallas Texas. My students love that I joke around and also keep up with current trends. I primarily teach vocal education, but I can also teach songwriting and piano. My approach as a teacher is to make sure they are comfortable and to make them the best vocalists they can be and hopefully to see them on the big screen or their name in lights some day.
