About Me

Hello, my name is Jhyla. I have been playing the piano for over 10 years, and I currently attend Prairie View University, minoring in music. I learned to read and write music at an early age, and my passion for music has only grown over the years. I love sharing my knowledge about music with others, and have experience teaching young children and adults piano. I am also an accomplished poet/songwriter, winning medals for my poetry at a young age and being added to a children's poetry book. I have also started a band and perform with them at local events around campus. I am from Austin, Texas. My musical influences include jazz, and I also enjoy classical. My teaching style can best be described as free-flowing. My teaching philosophy can best be described by saying that I allow creativity to flow like water and allow students to understand the material in whatever way that helps them. In my lessons, you can expect to learn the basics, like how to read music on the staff, write music on the staff, play scales, along with musical terminology, and how it relates to current trending music. I like to tell my students they can do and be anything with hard work. My favorite thing about teaching is watching students' love and appreciation for music grow. My favorite performance was my most recent one with my band for the spring show. I primarily teach piano and how to play and read music, but I can also teach songwriting, help with vocals, and encourage creative playing on the piano.
