About Me
Hello! My name is Andy, and I am a singer, choir director, multi-instrumentalist, and composer/songwriter. I have a wide variety of experience, from performing original indie-rock songs with just my guitar and a microphone to singing classical music in 200-person choirs. I have experience teaching in formal settings as director of a number of different ensembles, as well as in less formal settings, helping friends learn guitar and write songs.
Andy H. is proficient in and teaches Guitar Lessons, Vocal Lessons, Song Writing Lessons .

Degree and Field of Study:

BA in MusicDecember
University of Virginia
BA in AstronomyDecember
University of Virginia

Formal Education:

BA in Music (Composition and Choral Conducting) from UVA.

Private Education:

N/A

Performing Experience:

I have vast and varied performing experience, including singing in the Defiant Requiem (Verdi) at the Strathmore Music Center, the North American premier of St. Luke's Passion by Ēriks Ešenvalds, and Mozart's Requiem in Riga, Latvia while on an international tour with the University Singers. I have performed solo parts in a peer's senior recital as a character in Don Giovanni, Carmen, and the Pirates of Penzance. As a guitarist, I have performed at a number of parties, including the UVA Astronomy Department's annual dinner. Back in high school, I performed two original songs for the entire school with my own band

Experience Teaching:

I was Music Director of the Flying V's for 3 years, section leader of the University Singers for 2 years, director of a volunteer student chorus in Spring 2025, and I am currently employed as Music Director of Virginia a Cappella, a selective curricular vocal ensemble at UVA. These positions have provided me with extensive experience teaching vocal technique and performance practice at many different levels, amateur to semi-professional. My experience teaching songwriting and guitar is less formal—helping friends and other students who came to me for advice—but I have still helped people with a wide range of musical backgrounds, from those with very little technical knowledge to those with an advanced understanding of music theory.
