Hi! My name is Alexander, I go by Alex, and I am a self-taught pianist of around six years. There are a lot of presuppositions one may have when they hear “self-taught pianist”, and most of them likely have some truth! I cannot read sheet music, although I will get there eventually. I do not have any formal training in music theory either. I believe, however, given my advanced progress with the piano as an instrument, that anyone can learn to play the piano. More than that, anyone can learn to play something that they themself like, completely unique to them. It is more important to me that I can sit down and play something appropriate to the setting or mood, at any given time or place, than to be able to perfectly read or play sheet music. I have utmost respect for those willing to commit themselves to such endeavors, but more often than not I have found that my peers who chose such a path were unsatisfied with their choice. Rather, they wished they could improvise and play what they wanted. Moreover, there have been countless times where I’ve been asked things like “What composer is that?” and “Are you a music major?”, when I have been improvising something completely new and unique. Not to come off as boasting, rather, I would hope this sentiment can inspire confidence in a would be pianist that they too can create beauty. If this sounds enticing, then I would love to share my thoughts and teachings with you! I mostly play classical/romantic sounding music, my favorite composers being Rachmaninoff and Chopin. I listen to classical and romantic composers religiously and have a good ear for classical music.
