Garrett holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master’s degree in Education, bringing both artistic excellence and strong educational foundations to his teaching. He has extensive experience teaching music across multiple settings, including public schools, private institutes, and individualized private instruction. In addition to his academic background, Professor Garrett has served as Minister of Music at his local church for over 25 years, providing leadership in worship, music education, and musical development within religious communities. Professor Garrett specializes in creating custom, tailor-made lesson plans designed to meet each student’s unique musical goals, learning style, and experience level. He teaches piano, voice, saxophone, and clarinet, and is committed to helping students build strong technique, confidence, and a lifelong appreciation for music. He also conducts musical workshops for church music departments and musical groups, offering training in musicianship, performance, and ensemble development. Performing Experience Bio I have been privileged throughout my career to perform in a wide range of professional, sacred, and high-profile musical spaces. My performing experience includes providing professional background vocals for some of the most influential and anointed Gospel artists in the industry, including Kim Burrell, Duranice Pace, Kirk Franklin, Twinkie Clark-Terrell, and Orlando Wright, among others. In addition to my work within the Gospel music community, I have had the honor of performing for Vice President Joe Biden during a presidential campaign event alongside President Barack Obama, representing excellence in music at a national level. I have also been featured as a guest vocal artist for numerous Gospel artists and have contributed as a co-writer and producer, collaborating on various musical projects that support worship, recording, and live performance ministries. Beyond the stage, I have served as a Minister of Music since the age of 15, providing musical leadership, training, and direction across multiple regions. My ministerial service includes leadership roles within the AME Zion Church, where I have served as Minister of Music for the Rock Hill District (SC), the Charlotte District (NC), and currently the Mobile District, with some districts encompassing up to 23 churches. Additionally, I have served as one of the International AME Zion Music Leaders and Board Members, contributing to the development, administration, and advancement of sacred music at a global level. Teaching Experience Professor Garrett brings a broad range of private and institutional teaching experience to the university setting. He has provided individualized instruction in piano, voice, and saxophone across multiple respected music organizations in the Carolinas. His teaching emphasizes technical development, musical expression, and personalized learning tailored to each student’s goals. He has served as a private music instructor with Onstage & Performing Arts in Charlotte, North Carolina, teaching piano, voice, and saxophone. He also taught private piano instruction at Woody’s Music in Rock Hill, South Carolina. In Fort Mill, South Carolina, Professor Garrett provided piano and voice instruction with Creative Melodies, and piano instruction with Encore Music. Through these roles, he has worked with students of varying ages, skill levels, and musical backgrounds, developing a flexible and student-centered teaching approach that translates effectively to higher education instruction.
