About Me
Gabe Vanis a lifelong guitarist and blues musician with deep roots in Iowa’s music scene. He began playing guitar as a child and later studied under local blues legend Brian “Taz” Grant, who introduced him to advanced chord theory, modes, and the expressive heart of the blues. At 18, Gabe co-founded his first band and earned a weekly residency at the iconic Blues on Grand, performing energetic sets that helped build a loyal following. While attending the University of Northern Iowa, he formed another Texas-blues-inspired group, performing the music of Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and the three Kings—Albert, Freddie, and B.B. In recent years, Gabe has drawn inspiration from his close friend Michael, who shared his love of the local jam scene and encouraged him to return to teaching. After Michael’s passing, Gabe made it his mission to carry that spirit forward by mentoring new players and helping others discover the joy of live music and community. Gabe’s teaching style is focused on helping students build real-world confidence by learning songs, rhythm, and improvisation in ways that prepare them to join local jams or play with other musicians. His goal is to make learning guitar not only educational, but a gateway into genuine musical connection and creativity.

Gabe V. has over 1–3 years of formal lesso years of music experience in the Pleasant Hill area.

Formal Education:

Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, University of Northern Iowa (2004) Tested out of Music Theory I based on prior private instruction and practical knowledge gained while studying under Brian “Taz” Grant.

Private Education:

Studied guitar under Judy Menard of Altoona, Iowa from ages 7 to 13, developing a strong foundation in technique, reading, and rhythm. At age 16, auditioned for and earned a spot to study with Des Moines blues legend Brian “Taz” Grant, focusing on advanced chord theory, modes, improvisation, and expressive phrasing. After eight months of study, Taz encouraged Gabe to continue his growth on stage, famously saying, “If you’re here to play the blues, I’ll see you at The Blues on Grand.”

Performing Experience:

Performed extensively with my first blues band, holding a weekly residency at The Blues on Grand and playing multiple shows each week across Iowa. Over several years, we performed hundreds of live shows, developing a strong stage presence and deep connection to the local blues community.

Experience Teaching:

Previously taught private guitar lessons focused on building strong fundamentals through practical theory and fretboard knowledge. Lessons began with understanding whole and half steps, scale construction, and simple permutation exercises before progressing into scales, modes, and improvisation. Students also worked on fretboard memorization, chord shapes, and hands-on projects to strengthen musical awareness and confidence.
