Mark picked up his first guitar at age 13, sparking a lifelong passion for music that continues to inspire both his playing and teaching. He began his musical journey studying classical guitar before branching out into rock, jazz, blues, and country — a blend that shaped his versatile and expressive playing style. Over the years, Mark has performed extensively throughout the Phoenix area with a variety of bands, including his current classic rock group, Cut the Chord. While he’s fluent in many genres, his personal favorites — classic rock, blues, and fingerstyle — deeply influence his approach to both performance and instruction. With more than 15 years of teaching experience, Mark’s greatest joy comes from helping students discover the same excitement and fulfillment that guitar has brought to his life. What to expect in my Guitar Lessons

Beginner - Intermediate - Advanced

My focus is on getting beginners playing right away. I feel that early success is key to getting over the starting hump and getting new players playing fast. I love to use backing tracks and play alongs! For my intermediate to more advanced players I use more of a coaching approach by focusing on the skills that the individual player wants to improve and tailoring the lessons to focus on their goals.

Formal Education:

Masters in Education M.Ed.

Private Education:

Like most guitar players all of my formal instruction has been private. I started out taking lessons from my local guitar shop and that got me playing well enough to jam with other musicians, where I learned a ton! As an adult I became obsessed with Chet Atkins, so I started taking formal lessons and for several years I focused on classical, finger style, and improvisation. The guitar is something that you study for life. There is always something cool to learn!

Performing Experience:

I have played with several bands over the years and currently with Cut The Chord. We play a mix of classic rock tunes and originals.

Experience Teaching:

My formal job in life was high school science teacher. Over the years I hosted several guitar clubs, as most schools did not have guitar classes, and gave lessons part time. I have retired from the science class room and focus on guitar exclusively.
