About Me
My name is Jack, and I am an actor-musician based out of Oak Park, IL. I have been a professional performer and musician for the better part of 10 years. As a music instructor, I have worked with students in both private guitar lessons and in larger group settings. My teaching philosophy is to follow the students with what excites them about the guitar first. I like to make the room fun and engaging to help foster a love of the instrument. My years of experience as a self-taught guitar player have helped me relate to new students and find nuanced ways to help them build their connection with music.

Jack M. has over 20 years of music experience in the Oak Park area.

What to expect in my Guitar Lessons

Beginner - Intermediate - Advanced

In guitar lessons with me, we will focus on the following key areas: 1. Finding comfort and confidence in approaching the instrument by focusing on basic technique. 2. Before jumping into scales and music theory topics, we will start with finding the music/genre that the student is excited about and build a lexicon of approaches pertaining to that style. 3. I will always meet the student where they are currently, whether a beginner or a more intermediate player. Lessons will consist of a mixture of ear training, exercises, and really digging into learning songs. 4. At the end of the day, I prefer to focus on making music and having the students find their excitement in playing a song.

What to expect in my Song Writing Lessons

-

In song writing lessons with me, we will focus on the following key areas: 1. The building blocks of song structure (verse, chorus, bridge) 2. Finding some simple chord progressions and their relation to each other. 3. Writing exercises that will help with finding inspiration and putting those ideas to music. 4. Other exercises include improvisation, deep listening, ear training, and writing prompts.

Formal Education:

BA in Theatre Performance (North Central College)

Private Education:

Most of my musical training was based on learning songs by ear. My father is a self-taught musician, and he instilled in me a curiosity and a drive to learn songs by doing deep listening exercises. He started us improvising, or jamming, at a very young age to get comfortable with expressing ourselves and not be so boxed in. Much of my time in college was spent learning from, and jamming with, some of the jazz majors I was surrounded by. They helped to further instill a sense of exploration and a deep love of listening to your fellow players in an ensemble.

Performing Experience:

15 years experience performing with bands and in theatrical productions. Currently playing with two bands. IG: (@therealtime_band) (@moderndaybreakband)
