My first teaching job was working with an ambitious music store owner and head teacher. I can legitimately teach guitar, bass, and trumpet, having played trumpet in junior high and high school jazz, marching, and concert bands. However, I took lessons on bass and guitar and played in bands since age 16. The head teacher was so ambitious that she would agree to teach anyone anything, sending me home with a beginner's book for nearly any instrument and instructing me to stay one page ahead of the student. I ended up teaching flute, accordion, drums, and so on. That's how I got my teaching experience. My legitimate instruments are guitar, bass, and trumpet; I can also play conga, but it's not a very profitable instrument to teach.
