About Me
Growing up in a musical family, Calenbegan taking piano lessons in second grade, started playing guitar in 5th grade and started his first band in 6th grade. Throughout high school, as his guitar skills became more proficient, diving into technical genres such as progressive metal, he was unable to find a drummer who could keep up with the material. At 17 he chose to start playing drums himself. This became an obsession that lead him to study percussion performance in college which allowed him to expand his knowledge and skills across a wide variety of genres. Over the following decades he has been able to apply the common denominator of rhythm and percussion technique not only on the drum set but across all instruments.
Calen D. is proficient in and teaches Guitar Lessons, Drum Lessons, Record Engineer Produce .

What to expect in my Drum Lessons

Beginner - Intermediate - Advanced

I specialize in hand and foot technique. While learning songs and self expression on any instrument is paramount to learning, equally is prepping the body to be able to perform on any instrument. For beginners, there will be an introduction into rudiments, proper form and function, basic music notation understanding/reading, along with an approach to productive and satisfying practice. When this is applied to learning songs or creating their own material, their progress will be significantly quicker and more importantly, fun! For intermediate players, there will be a problem solving approach, refining skills already known, and correcting problematic technique or form that may have gone under the radar. From here, there are various paths to go down, depending on the student. Whether learning more difficult songs, learning to transcribe/read and write music, learning to listen better, along with more advanced rudiments, rhythm studies, and technical growth—that is increasing accuracy, control, speed, and endurance. For advance players, there will be a performance check in to see where the player is at in their skills. Identifying gaps in their knowledge and skill set, and then applying technical approaches to rounding out their performance and over all sound. This dives into creating one's own sound, breaking out of ruts, and diving into advance rhythmic theories and studies, along with advanced techniques including modulation, displacement, multi-limb independence and isolation, polyrhythmic studies, amongst a never ending list of possibilities. There's always another level, and for my advanced players, it's my job to show them there is always more to learn!

Formal Education:

Percussion Performance Associates in Arts from Musicians Institute in Los Angeles California.

Private Education:

Jeff Bowders (Paul Gilbert), Rob Carson (Snare World Champion in the 70's), Chuck Silverman (Author of various books such as The Latin Rudiments, Afro-Caribbean Rhythms for the Drum Set, The Funkmasters), and many other percussion, guitar and piano instructors over the years.

Performing Experience:

Began playing live local gigs in 10th grade, have had the opportunity to perform at the NAMM show back in 2010, have had the opportunity to open for Virgil Donati's In This Life project, a plethora of various restaurant gigs while playing for a folk rock band, and many local and regional festivals over the years.

Experience Teaching:

Teaching has always been apart of working with other musicians, especially with more technical material, but also teaching younger siblings, nephews and nieces, and friends who have never played an instrument is a regular pass time. My first informal lessons go as far back 6th grade, teaching my best friend how to play bass for my band.
