About Me

Hello! My name is Dan, and I am a saxophone player originally from Wisconsin. I have studied and performed music for over 30 years and recently retired from the Army Band program after 26 years of service. My musical influences and tastes include jazz, rhythm and blues, rock, and pop, but I enjoy listening and performing all styles of music. I am currently a performer and educator, but I also have experience leading and directing small musical ensembles. My teaching style is a hybrid of sorts, using a variety of methods, teacher-demonstration, and visual/audible aids to best meet the needs of the student. We all hear and learn music differently, and I prefer not to use a “universal” teaching method. My goal as a teacher is to help each student fully understand their current musical assignments, achieve other musical goals, and to help broaden their musical understanding and creativity. I get excited when my students are engaged and thrilled with whatever they are working on, or practicing or learning something new, and I enjoy encouraging and helping students through musical challenges. I have had the honor of performing for military service members and audiences throughout the world. One of my favorite performances was for North Korean defectors who were awarded citizenship in South Korea. We were their first taste of American culture and music during their transition into their new homeland. 26 years in the Army Band program, performing for service members, US and foreign officials, and local audiences throughout the United States, Europe and Asia.

Experience Teaching:

2 years private instruction with Music & Arts in Fayetteville, GA, and another 2 years with local middle school, high school and college level musicians. Directed several jazz, acoustic and pop-commercial ensembles while serving in the Army Bands, providing individual instruction and development as needed. 4 years in Army Band recruiting, proctoring auditions and fielding resumes for over 200 hired musicians from 2.
