About Me
Hi, I’m Grant, a cellist and instructor with a lifelong background in music. I began studying cello at age six and trained for over twelve years under Ms. Marnie Kaller, a highly respected New Jersey cellist known for her extensive work as an orchestral principal, chamber musician, and educator. Studying with her gave me a strong technical foundation and a deep appreciation for musical expression, discipline, and thoughtful teaching. From an early age, I performed in orchestras, chamber ensembles, and solo settings, experiences that continue to shape both my musicianship and the way I teach today. Throughout school, I held first chair from grades 5 through 12 and later earned first chair for multiple years in the Delbarton Abbey Orchestra, performing alongside adult and professional musicians. I was accepted into the New Jersey Region 1 Youth Symphony, received multiple performance awards, and regularly performed solos for large audiences. One of the most meaningful moments of my musical journey was leading my orchestra while performing a concerto at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark, the largest cathedral in New Jersey. As my performance experience grew, I naturally stepped into teaching and leadership roles. I ran sectionals, coached younger musicians, worked as an adjunct instructor helping students prepare for placement in full orchestra, and led the Young Abbey Youth Orchestra, an intermediate ensemble focused on building strong fundamentals and confidence. ???? What lessons feel like A lesson with me is structured but relaxed. I focus on identifying each student’s strengths while thoughtfully addressing areas for improvement, all in a way that feels supportive and encouraging rather than overwhelming. Sessions are goal-oriented, but never rigid. I adjust pacing and intensity based on the student’s needs, experience level, and personal goals. For students preparing for auditions, performances, or orchestra placement, lessons can be more focused and intensive. For hobbyists or casual learners, I’m equally happy to keep things lighter while still building solid technique and musicianship. ???? Areas of instruction In addition to cello lessons, I offer instruction in: Performance preparation Audition preparation Sight-reading Ear training Music theory Instrument care and maintenance My background in the Suzuki method, sight-reading, and theory allows me to adapt to a wide range of learning styles and experience levels. ???? New to cello? For beginners who are curious but not ready to commit, I offer introductory lesson packages and provide a practice cello for use during lessons, allowing students to explore the instrument before purchasing their own. ????‍????‍???? A personal note I’m also a father of two young musicians, ages 5 and 8. Bringing music into their lives has been one of my greatest joys and has deepened my appreciation for meeting students with patience, encouragement, and curiosity. ???? Teaching philosophy I’m adaptable, congenial, and genuinely enjoy getting to know each student. My goal is to meet players exactly where they are and tailor each lesson program to support their individual growth, whether that means preparing for an important audition, building confidence in an ensemble setting, or simply enjoying the process of making music.
