Carmen has always loved music from an early age. She began playing and singing by ear at the age of five and continued her education by attending college on a vocal scholarship followed by studying with Emile Renan former director of the NY City Opera. Her musical influences include growing up in church choir as the daughter of a Baptist minister to learning songs from amazing vocalists like Whitney Houston and Celine Dion. Carmen's favorite thing about music is the way it can express and elicit emotion, from joy to sorrow, while allowing a calming and therapeutic effect. Her favorite thing about teaching music is seeing a student’s confidence grow while overcoming obstacles and self-doubt. One of her favorite teaching experiences was having one session to coach a ten year-old to prepare for a last minute audition for an arts middle school and her successfully performing Silent Night 3 days later, being accepted and now singing at an even higher level than she ever expected, two years later.
