What to expect in my Vocal Lessons

Beginner - Intermediate - Advanced

Because I have 18 years of recording and production experience, I also coach students with a studio-aware ear. Intermediate singers learn microphone technique, layering basics, and how to deliver vocals that translate clearly in a mix. Having worked with thousands of students across schools and community programs in Henry County — and expanding into Clayton County — I understand how to help developing singers break through plateaus and grow confidently. My goal is to help intermediate vocalists gain control, consistency, and confidence so they’re ready for advanced performance and recording opportunities.

What to expect in my Song Writing Lessons

Beginner - Intermediate - Advanced

Students in my advanced songwriting lessons can expect professional-level guidance focused on sharpening craft, strengthening artistic identity, and writing songs that truly connect. We go far beyond basic structure. Students will refine lyric depth, advanced rhyme schemes, melodic development, hook construction, storytelling, thematic cohesion, and emotional authenticity. I help writers eliminate filler lines, avoid clichés, and develop intentional phrasing that elevates their work from “good idea” to finished, compelling song. As a producer with 18 years of experience and the executive producer of six collaborative albums featuring thousands of young artists, I bring a real-world perspective into every session. Students learn how lyrics and melody translate in production, how to write with performance and recording in mind, and how to create songs that stand up in a competitive industry environment. We also explore: • Writing to track vs. writing a cappella • Genre-specific songwriting techniques (Hip Hop, Pop, R&B, Gospel, Soul, etc.) • Developing a unique artistic voice • Editing and rewriting with discipline • Preparing songs for recording or release My goal is to help serious writers grow in both skill and confidence — not just finishing songs, but finishing strong songs.

What to expect in my Record Engineer Produce

-

Students in my advanced Record Engineering and Production lessons can expect hands-on, real-world training rooted in 18 years of professional recording and production experience. We focus on developing both technical skill and critical listening. Students will gain a deep understanding of signal flow, gain staging, microphone selection and placement, vocal tracking, layering, and session organization. We also explore arrangement strategy, beat production, sound selection, and building dynamic, industry-ready productions across genres including Hip Hop, Pop, R&B, Gospel, Soul, Rock, and more. On the mixing side, students will learn: • EQ shaping and frequency management • Compression techniques and dynamic control • Reverb and spatial placement • Stereo imaging and depth • Vocal clarity and balance • Preparing mixes for mastering Because I own and operate my own studio equipment and have executive produced six collaborative albums featuring thousands of young artists, I teach from practical experience — not theory alone. I also emphasize how to achieve near-professional quality results using both full studio setups and more mobile or budget-friendly equipment, an essential skill in today’s production world. Students won’t just learn software shortcuts — they’ll learn how to listen, think like producers, and make intentional creative decisions. Links to projects and production examples are available upon request.

Formal Education:

While I do not hold a formal music degree, my professional education has been built through nearly two decades of hands-on studio production, performance leadership, mentorship, and large-scale educational programming. My training comes from real-world studio work, live production directing, songwriting collaboration, and consistent professional execution.

Private Education:

My private education has come through years of mentorship, self-directed study, studio collaboration, performance leadership, and continuous professional development in songwriting, vocal production, recording engineering, and music direction. I remain committed to refining my craft and staying current with modern production techniques and industry standards.

Performing Experience:

I have over 25 years of live performance experience, performing both original music and the works of other artists. For the past 20 years, I have worked as an educational music performer and studio artist, regularly performing in small to mid-size school assemblies and educational programs across Georgia. My performances combine live music, storytelling, and interactive engagement. In addition, I have served as music director for three live stage productions that were performed in some of the largest venues in Anchorage, Alaska. In those roles, I arranged music, directed vocalists and musicians, and oversaw the full musical execution of each production.

Experience Teaching:

I have 27 years of teaching experience across preschool, elementary, middle school, high school, and after-school programs. For the past seven years, I have led my own educational music company, Independent Playground Studios. Through IPS, we travel to dozens of schools, libraries, and community programs, teaching students how to write, record, and produce their own original songs — often using only smartphones and tablets. I have worked with children of every age, nationality, and temperament, and I thrive in helping students with behavioral or emotional challenges build confidence through music. My approach combines structure, encouragement, high expectations, and creativity. Teaching is not just my profession — it is my calling.
