What to expect in my Record Engineer Produce
Beginner/Intermediate: While Ableton is preferred, I understand the basics of most DAWs and am comfortable working with them for beginner lessons.-I teach students to set up recording tracks, EQ, effects, mixing, MIDI, and essential DAW functions. I also teach basic mic placement if applicable, recording techniques, and dealing with multitrack/take lane recording.-More importantly, I work with students to execute their creative vision through chording, beat creation, and song structuring.-We will build off of one project file, covering essential functions, adding percussion, bass, chords, and melody, then export the project in industry-standard codecs. Intermediate/Advanced: For DAW-intensive lessons, students must have Ableton Live 11 or higher. For in-studio and recording technique lessons, the student can use the DAW of their choosing as long as they are proficient in that program.-Lessons are student-goal-oriented, with a focus on workflow and collaboration. 1. The student and I set a long-term goal for what they hope to achieve. Depending on what this is, the number of lessons could range from just a few to several. 2. Goals may look like: setting up a project and aiming to complete one part each lesson, giving and teaching creative/musical direction to advanced engineers, or diving into mic selection and placement for drums, different amps, and vocals. 3. For those interested in mixing, I teach EQ and compression techniques, as well as leveling, spatial techniques, harmony mixing, and panning. 4. While there will be no "tests," I will be looking for DAW proficiency: keybind usage, effective workflows, organization of return and send tracks, and understanding of different DAW functions that we go over. 5. If the student is trying to release any music, we can review copyright, record labels, and discuss simple branding.
What to expect in my Guitar Lessons
My approach with each lesson is to practice fundamentals and techniques, while allowing ample time to learn new material and focus on music of the student's choosing. We'll discuss artists and genres up front, I'll make a selection of pieces, and we'll go from there! Lessons will be typically be split into three parts. 1. Warmup and review. This will look different for different levels. Beginner lessons will focus on learning the names of the strings, open chords, and basic strumming. With more advanced or farther along student, this will look like playing scales to a metronome or going over techniques from a previous lesson. 2. Fundamentals! Players just starting out will learn fretting and proper right and left hand techniques. Players who are further along will use this time to learn chords, chord positions, arpeggios, scales, music theory, improvisation, and more specialized techniques (16th note funk, palm muting, etc). 3. Song learning. We dive into a relevant song piece by piece. Each song may take several lessons to complete depending on complexity and player level. I expect the student to practice in between sessions. A few 15-minute practice sessions in between lessons keeps things flowing!
