My name is Mark. After 5 years of lessons, my family relocated to Los Gatos, CA. I started playing piano and organ for church services, and other social events at the age of 12. I started teaching piano lessons in 1986 to a number of students ranging from 5-70 years of age. I would start new students, as I was taught, with Thompson's "Teaching Little Fingers to Play" Also used Schaum and Bastien methods as well. Hanon fingering exercises is another great book for learning prooer fingering, as well as note recognition. In addition, I use flash cards to help with note recognition in the Bass and Treble clefs. As the students progressed, I introduce them to Major and Minor chords, root, 1st inversion, and 2nd inversion. Beginning students are also taught the Major scales, and the proper fingering for those scales. I also use theory books to assist with note identification key signature, note value, expression techniques regarding proper posture, hand form and position, and terminology regarding timing, speed, and volume. After getting these basic concepts completed I introduce students to classical music Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, and Mozart initially. As the students progress, we explore many other styles, and improvisation. Learning the piano is challenging but worth the time, concentration, and practice. To be able to sight read a piece of music for the time and play it, is the most valuable thing I learned, and still enjoy to this day. Being able to sit down and play for hours is very relaxing and rewarding.
