About Me

Hi, my name is Derek and I am a highly passionate live/studio musician, raised by a multi-generational family of musicians. I have been a student of music for over 15 years and my musical influences come from a variety of different genres like Live Rock 'n' Roll, Roots Reggae, Rhythm and Blues, as well as harder sounding genres like Metal and Punk. I am a big fan of "Beatles-esq bands" like The Claypool Lennon Delirium. I also enjoy exploring guitar effects and new music technologies. My teaching style can best be described as flexible and adaptive, as I am willing to meet you where you're at, whether you've never touched a guitar in your life, or you've played for years and are sick of the plateau you've reached. I am offering lessons for acoustic and electric guitar, as well as for the electric bass guitar. In my lessons, you can expect to learn guitar/equipment functions and anatomy, coordination-building finger exercise/practice techniques, basic/mid-level music theory, as well as independent song learning techniques. I like to tell my students "if you practice any instrument, with proper technique, for at least 5 minutes a day, 5 days a week, you will see improvement no matter what". My favorite thing about teaching is seeing my students excitement when they begin to understand that they have way more potential than they ever thought before. My students love that I can patiently explain mistakes and give effective constructive criticism at the appropriate time. My approach as a teacher is to leave students with a better and more confident understanding of musical technique and music theory.
