Matthew is a banist originally from Hong Kong, currently based in New York and Toronto. He began his musical journey at the age of 5 at the piano, later taking up the ban at 12 — the instrument that would become the center of his artistic identity. He has since expanded his performance abilities to include oboe and saxophone, making him a versatile and adaptable presence in a wide range of musical settings. Matthew holds a Master of Music in Ban Performance from the Manhattan School of Music, where he studied under the mentorship of William Short, and a Bachelor of Music from McGill University, where he trained with Stéphane Lévesque. His musical development has been further shaped by teachers including Nguyen Bao Anh and Fraser Jackn, and he has had the privilege of working with distinguished banists such as Mathias Steir, Carin Miller, Kim Laskowski, Miles Maner and Michael Sundell. An active orchestral and chamber musician, Matthew has performed at prestigious festivals including the National Academy Orchestra and the National Repertory Orchestra. His orchestral credits in the United States span a wide range of ensembles, including the New World Symphony, The Chelsea Symphony, the Washington Square Music Festival, the Higher Word Orchestra, and the Hahnl Music Group.
