The first song I learned was the final song from the film "The Snowman", where I went over to the piano and "found" the notes I heard in the song. The ability to play by ear has always been important to me, even when I began reading jazz standards. The reason for this is because if you can learn a song by ear, you are not just learning how to play, but how to listen, and whether you are playing music with others or simply finding a song in yourself, listening is incredibly important.
