18 Years
I have been playing the guitar my whole life. I love music and teaching. See below for details.
Tom He. has over 18 years of music experience in the Hopewell area.
Tom He. is proficient in and teaches Guitar Lessons .Formal Education:
In 2009 I began studying music theory with Nancy Rao at Rutgers University. We studied the music of Schoenberg and Messiaen. After taking 4 semesters of theory, 2 semesters of history, and 4 semesters of musicianship, I decided to switch to the Mathematics department. In 2011 I joined a Jazz Chamber Ensemble at Masson Gross and received coaching from Vic Juris. College Courses Calc 1, 2, 3, 4 Linear Algebra Number Theory Topology Music Theory 1, 2, 3, 4
Private Education:
I began playing the guitar at age 4. In 1998 (age7), I began studying with a private teacher, Steve Hayden. Hayden used a curriculum designed by his teacher, Dennis Sandole. Lessons included a rigorous training in standard and modern theories of harmony, technically demanding exercises, and thorough ear training. I was given transcription assignments, usually following my own musical taste. I began with the Beatles (chords, melodies and vocal harmonies), then migrated to Wes Montgomery, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Debussy and Stravinsky. As a kid, I had an intense fascination with the sound of blues guitar (Jimi Hendrix, Duane Allman), and later became interested in more modern techniques (Allan Holdsworth, Joe Satriani, Jeff Beck). I stayed with Steve Hayden through 2009.
Performing Experience:
In 2005 a local Jazz Saxophonist, Jack furlong, picked me up. From 2005 to 2009, I played Jazz gigs frequently with the Jack Furlong Quartet (private events, coffee houses, restaurants). I also played occasionally with Jazz vocalist, Sue Giles. During this time period I participated in the NJ-IAJE Region 2 All State Jazz Ensemble (2005, 06, 07, 08, 09). Currently, I play an occasional rock/pop show at Tumulties Pub, New Brunswick, and occasional solo jazz-guitar gigs.
Experience Teaching:
I have taught a total of about 50 students. I usually follow the same approach as my teacher.
