About Me

Hi, my name is Yahzaya, and I’ve always loved listening to and playing music from an early age. When I was in second grade, I began playing orchestral instruments such as the violin, viola, cello, clarinet, flute, and percussion, and I continued doing so until seventh grade. After finishing my time in an orchestra setting, I continued to develop my craft by playing on various praise and worship teams at my church, as well as being part of a Christian rap band. I started out playing percussion and eventually expanded to different instruments, including the electric guitar, drums, piano, and bass guitar. I did that for seven years before moving and beginning to play bass guitar and piano for my new church. I’ve been doing that for about two years now. I am self-taught on all of the instruments I currently play, and I can’t wait to share my hard work and passion with others. My favorite thing about music is the peace, joy, and comfort that come from becoming immersed in it while I’m playing or listening. My favorite thing about teaching music is seeing the smiles on people’s faces when they discover they’re capable of so much more than they once thought. I love it when someone I’m teaching is determined to succeed—it inspires me to push myself harder and be an even better guide for them. One of my favorite teaching experiences was when I taught a child I babysit how to play a few simple songs on the piano using only two fingers. There was some frustration at first, but those feelings were quickly replaced by laughter and excitement as she achieved her goal. When taking lessons with me, you can expect to be challenged, because I believe that anyone can learn to play anything as long as they are willing to put in the work. You can expect me to encourage you, support you, and cheer you on until you succeed—and when you do, we’ll celebrate together.
