About Me

Hey there, my name is Rich! I’ve spent years helping students learn to play, understand, and enjoy music-and I still love every minute of it! Music has been the center of my life both as a performer and as a teacher. I spent more than 20 years as a band director, building programs and guiding students in classrooms and on stage. For the past 20+ years, I’ve worked as a private instructor, teaching piano and a wide range of band and orchestral instruments to students of all ages and skill levels. What makes my teaching different is a simple idea: music should be something you enjoy, not something you struggle through. I developed an approach called Practical Piano, which focuses on helping students play the music they actually want to play-whether that’s a favorite song, playing with friends, or just sitting down and enjoying the instrument. I don’t believe music is only for the naturally gifted or classically trained. I’ve worked with hundreds of students, including many who started out thinking they couldn’t play at all-and proved themselves wrong. If you’re willing to learn, I’ll meet you where you are and help you get where you want to go!

What to expect in my Keyboard and Piano Lessons

Beginner - Intermediate - Advanced

I’ve been playing piano and keyboard since 1978, and these days you’ll find me most Sundays behind the keys on my church praise team. If you’re looking for lessons that go beyond just working through a book, that’s where I come in. We’ll cover the basics of note reading, but we won’t stay stuck there-I like to move quickly into chords, patterns, and how songs are actually put together, so you can start playing real music you recognize. A lot of my students are interested in church music, bands, or simply being able to sit down and play along with recordings or family and friends. In lessons, we’ll break down chord progressions, build solid left-hand and right-hand accompaniment, and practice the skills you need to feel comfortable playing with others. Whether you’re brand new to the keyboard or picking it up again after a long break, I’ll meet you where you are and help you move toward the kind of playing you actually want to do.
