About Me
Hi, my name is Jacob and I am a jazz saxophonist from Jacksonville, FL. I have been a student of music for over 10 years currently in my final year of my jazz studies degree at UNF. My musical life is driven by a deep passion for live performance, stylistic versatility, and a thorough understanding of music theory. As an active jazz saxophonist and woodwind doubler, I bring real-world experience directly into the teaching studio. This multi-instrumental background gives me a unique, comprehensive perspective on tone production, technique, and cross-genre adaptability, allowing me to help students navigate the specific physical and mental demands of their instruments. I believe that true musical freedom is built on a foundation of solid theoretical knowledge and technical mastery, which is why my teaching philosophy centers on helping students develop a healthy, efficient relationship with their instrument. Lessons are an engaging, collaborative partnership tailored entirely to your unique goals, whether you are picking up the saxophone for the first time or mastering jazz improvisation. I mainly teach saxophone, but also teach clarinet, flute, and basic piano. In my studio, you can expect a structured, highly supportive environment designed to build both technical skill and performance confidence. Ultimately, my goal is to give you the technical excellence and creative freedom required to comfortably express your own unique musical voice in any setting.

What to expect in my Keyboard and Piano Lessons

Beginner -

Beginner piano students will build a well-rounded musical foundation starting with healthy hand posture, fluid finger independence, and sight-reading skills. Students will learn how to read notation and lead sheets, understand chords and key signatures, and develop the rhythmic coordination required to confidently play solo pieces or play alongside other musicians.

What to expect in my Orchestral Lessons

Beginner - Intermediate

Flute students can expect to develop a vibrant, resonant tone and technical agility through a focused approach to proper airstream, hand posture, and embouchure. Lessons cover all the fundamentals needed to equip classical players and woodwind doublers alike with the knowledge and precision needed for highly expressive performance.

What to expect in my Orchestral Lessons

Beginner - Intermediate

My clarinet lessons center on achieving a rich, focused sound by mastering air support, embouchure, and voicing. Students will work on finger placement, scales, technical exercises, and etudes to help them achieve their individual goals on the instrument.

What to expect in my Orchestral Lessons

Beginner - Intermediate - Advanced

In saxophone lessons, students will master the core mechanics of tone production, embouchure, and finger technique across multiple styles ranging from jazz/blues to pop/funk. They will learn the theory behind the music and various approaches to improvisation. I can also teach sight-reading and how to play in a big band section.

Formal Education:

I am currently in the final year of a jazz studies degree at the University of North Florida, focusing on saxophone performance. During my time at UNF, I have been studying flute and clarinet alongside saxophone.

Private Education:

I began taking piano lessons at a very young age, with about 4 years of piano lessons total, giving me a foundational understanding of music notation and piano technique. In high school, I studied jazz saxophone privately with Al Shikaly before attending UNF.

Performing Experience:

I have years of experience performing with local bands in Vero Beach, such as the 20th Street Jazz Band and Eastern Standard Time. Most recently, I've been performing with the UNF Jazz Ensemble 1, jazz combo, flute ensemble, and clarinet choir, as well as local bands in Jacksonville, such as the Rivertown Band.

Experience Teaching:

I currently don't have any teaching experience, but I'm very passionate about education and would love the opportunity to pass on the knowledge I've learned over the years.
