Review About Me
I started with classical piano at age 10 and in high school I began to pursue more popular music, in particular learning to read lead/chord charts. In college I continued w classical piano studies, music theory and began to seriously study jazz. When I graduated w my BA I returned to Chicago, where I had grown up and worked playing church music and also freelancing playing piano in jazz and pop situations.
Joseph S has over +30 years years of music experience in the Santa Fe area.
Joseph S is proficient in and teaches Keyboard and Piano Lessons .Formal Education:
I have a bachelors degree in Liberal Arts from Southern Illinois University. I took private piano lessons for 3 and a half years and studied harmony, theory, ear training and performed in university choral ensembles and jazz bands.
Private Education:
many many years of private piano study some particularly important teachers were initial jazz studies w Joe Liberto in Carbondale, IL, Erwin Helfer blues and jazz in Chicago, harmolodics w Don Cherry in San Francisco, and jazz piano w Kevin Zoernig in Santa Fe. About ten years ago I began to also pursue the upright bass. I am mostly self taught though I also studied briefly w Dave Parlato in Santa Fe.
Performing Experience:
I have played church music in numerous churches in Chicago and Santa Fe. I have been freelancing playing jazz and contemporary music for the past 40 years. Currently in Santa Fe I play in the jazz duo the Jazzbians, 2 jazz quartets - Instinct Qu

I have been teaching piano privately for over 30 years. I also have taught music at the elementary school level
