I teach beginners, try to "tune in" to their strengths. I encourage them to learn simple melodies and chords and try to get them to teach themselves very recognizable tunes, a few scales: diatonic, major pentatonic. If they seem capabable, I try to get them to learn songs like "House of Rising Sun" because it has all of the basic open chords and one important half bar (F). I encourage "doodling" and simple improv, even on just a few notes so they are creating music right away.
