About Me

My name is Ian and I come from a completely musical family and started playing when I was around 9 years old. I'm 22 years old now and my focus in music is jazz piano and composing/songwriting. I have many Influences but I would say the greatest is Bill Evans or Herbie Hancock. I have been studying with various jazz pianists over the past 4 years and went to WSU for 1 year where I studied music composition, theory, and performance. I ultimately found that it wasn't worth the money and decided to go on privately studying and self-studying. I have been teaching music for over a year and have taught many different age ranges, most were kids though. I teach composition and piano, but my approach in teaching piano varies from most teachers. Because of my jazz background, I like to focus on learning music by ear and connecting with your playing by singing along. Most students, however, I usually teach the basics of piano and songs they enjoy, since ear training is advanced. I still find that kids enjoy doing ear training exercises and guessing notes even if they are new. I know how to read and can teach it. I would love to work at your studio and hope you consider me!

What to expect in my Keyboard and Piano Lessons

Beginner - Intermediate

That I will try and balance technique and playing with fun and that I really want to know what it is about music you want to learn and how you want to sound. That as we progress I will want you to rely more on your ear and if you're interested in delving even further into the music, I would teach the theory though I try and work it in as naturally as I can throughout.
