About Me
With over 20 years of experience teaching music in both schools and private studios, James brings energy, patience, and a genuine love of music to every lesson. He works with students of all ages and skill levels, helping them build confidence, technique, and a lifelong appreciation for music. As the son of a classical pianist, James has enjoyed piano music for as long as he can remember. While this was his first exposure to music, he became a musician at age nine, and guitar was actually the instrument he started with. However, it didn't take long for James to become a multi-instrumentalist. James started playing alto saxophone in the 5th grade, and switched to tenor sax in the 8th grade. He continued to play both guitar and saxophone through high school, and he earned a full saxophone scholarship from Rogers State University. James ultimately chose to attend the University of North Texas, where he earned his Jazz studies Bachelor's degree in Saxophone Performance and graduated Cum Laude. Later, he attended Dallas College-Richland Campus. During his time as a college student, James studied saxophone, jazz guitar, piano, percussion, and voice, as well as music theory and composition. He also began playing bass guitar during this time, as a diversion from his rigorous coursework. Learning more about these instruments allowed James to develop a deeper appreciation for each of them. James is a professional saxophone player, and his career as a professional performer started when he played with Dallas' own Blues great Al 'TNT' Braggs. He has experienced both national and international tours while playing with a multitude of outstanding performers. James has also enjoyed performing and recording on electric bass. He has been invited to perform with a variety of different groups, as his versatility and musical style have been noticed by many. To this day, he continues to perform in these various local groups. James may be a seasoned musician and performer, but his musical expertise doesn't stop there; he has extensive experience as a music teacher as well. He has been teaching saxophone, piano, guitar, bass guitar, voice, drum, and percussion for many years in both private and classroom settings. James' teaching style is flexible and encouraging, and his love of learning inspires his students. He believes that everyone can develop their musicality and gain access to the amazing experience of playing music. He enables students to progress quickly with a step by step approach. Whether you're just starting out, preparing for auditions, or returning to music after a break, he'll assist you in reaching your goals and developing a strong foundation of musicianship while also keeping lessons fun and inspiring.
