There was a moment, after a flood, that a guitar found its way into my hands—and it changed my life. My guitar journey began with my aunt, an extraordinary musician who played everything from harp to violin to guitar and even sang opera. After a devastating flood in her basement, the only thing that survived was her guitar, floating on the water. Years later, she gave it to me as my first instrument, but only after I made a promise never to stop playing. To this day, I’ve kept my word. Today, I’ve been teaching guitar for over 25 years, from ages 8 to 80, and I still lead a Sunday community beginner’s guitar class, with students spanning from their late 20s to their late 70s. As a professional guitarist and songwriter for 30 years, I pass on that same gift that was giving to me, knowing each student I teach carries a spark, just waiting to grow.
