Hello my name is Cully and I have pursued music for the last 12 years of my life. In this time I have managed to teach myself piano and get a degree in Piano Performance from Berea College. I have lesson teaching experience as well as classroom experience. I also teach voice and incorporate the recorder in my lessons. Additionally, my favorite thing about teaching is the opportunity I get to learn from my students and each student of mine always has something to teach me.
Cully B. has over 5 years of music experience in the Wilmington area.
Cully B. is proficient in and teaches Keyboard and Piano Lessons, Vocal Lessons .Degree and Field of Study:
What to expect in my Vocal Lessons
In my voice lessons I cater specifically to the students experience and talent. From ages 5-13 I employ a “do as I do” approach. Body movements such as clapping, snapping, and stomping are incredibly important for memory and joy. I also use story telling as a way to engage the youngest students. For 13 and up I start using more comprehension and questions. “Why does your voice sound shaky?” Or “did that sound feel forced?” Or “in what ways can you change your air so you get a better sound?” I start using questions as a method of teaching to get the student to be more aware of the active role in using their voice effectively. I also use recorder as a teaching method for it is the best way to employ an understanding of the breath as a whole. The importance of being musical is wholly tied to our connection to the voice and I look forward to working together on your journey!
What to expect in my Keyboard and Piano Lessons
In my piano lessons I emphasize the importance of finger dexterity and flexibility. Most students come in wanting to learn their favorite piece of music and although I always encourage learning a performance piece-there must be detailed finger and wrist technique to achieve any piece of music. For kids ages 5-12 I do less talking and more teaching through “do as I do” and I balance lessons with finger techniques and the beginnings of reading sheet music. I employ the “Alfred Basic” piano books because they are a great resource. For students 13 and up I can speak more freely about the why of piano technique and how it is developed through a performance piece. I hope to have you in my lessons!
