Derik began playing guitar and bass guitar at the age of 11. Over the years, he developed his skills further by playing in bands and pursuing an academic career at the Atlanta Institute of Music and Technology where he received an Associates of Applied Science in Music Technology concentrated on guitar performance. He gained performance experience in the Athens and Atlanta area by playing and with acts such as Athens Creative Theatre and Athens Collective Arts Workshop. Though Derik can teach many different genres of music, his musical personal favorites are Rock, Jazz, Blues, and Country which had great influence on his style of playing.
