My name is Rahim and I am originally from San Juan, Puerto Rico but I have lived in Florida and Mexico City and now currently reside in New Orleans. I am fluent in both English and Spanish. I have been singing classically for over 4 years. I started with little to no education in classical voice and I am now excelling at it. I believe that as long as the student has a good work ethic and a basic talent for music, they will be able to develop all the skills necessary for becoming a great musician. When I was younger I listened to a wide variety of genres from punk to rock to metal music. When I applied to college I auditioned for both guitar and voice and was accepted to voice. I proceeded to study voice, which I had never done before, and now I have had a successful career in and outside of school. The truth about being able to learn music and all that in encompasses I believe to be no secret. As long as the teacher is confident in his or her teaching and their student then the student will progress. I think I am a good match for this opportunity because I have been wanting to gain experience in teaching vocal lessons as I will be doing it for the rest of my life.
Rahim Mu. has over 2 years of music experience in the New Orleans area.
Rahim Mu. is proficient in and teaches Vocal Lessons .Formal Education:
As I stated in my Bio, I was born in Puerto Rico and also lived in Florida and Mexico. I was in Puerto Rico for four years and the same in Florida. It was in Mexico where I have lived most of my life being 10 years. I learned piano in Florida through private lessons but when I really began my love for music was in Mexico. I went to a private school called American School Foundation in Mexico City. There I took up the trumpet for 3 years, took private guitar lessons and joined a choir. I excelled in choir and I won the Choir award in high school. After graduation my Choir director suggested I look into applying to music school. I was told that when asked if I had any previous private voice instruction I needed to say no because Choir did not count as private.
Private Education:
I recently graduated from Loyola University New Orleans with a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance. I graduated with the Most Outstanding Voice Student award. I studied with Dreux Montegut while at Loyola and he has had almost 20 years of professional experience teaching voice and has taught me many things. I also took a Vocal Pedagogy class while attending Loyola so I know the body parts that pertain to the voice.
Performing Experience:
I have been performing with New Orleans Opera Chorus for the past two seasons and in this upcoming season I am in three of the four operas and I have one role and one solo. I have performed in four main stage operas with Loyola Opera. I have done many scenes program as well as performed in New Orleans Opera's Opera on Tap which are performed in Bars around New Orleans. I have had two Church Choir Section leader jobs and have done cantoring around the city singing Masses, Funerals and Weddings. My most recent significant performance was this Summer when I was Nerone in Monteverdi's L'incoronazione di Poppea at Manhattan School of Music's Summer Voice Program. We performed four times and I did not have a cover nor a double castmate. I am truly proud that I was able to do that and I impressed a lot of people in New York.
Experience Teaching:
I do not have too much experience teaching music unfortunately. I was required to teach a couple students for my Vocal Pedagogy class and I have given my brother who has no voice background a few lessons. I have been so focused on my performances that it would have been nearly impossible and irresponsible to take on any students. However now that I have finally graduated I know that I am able and very willing to teach students.
