I have played violin for about 45 years. In my 20's, I discovered "fiddle", and it opened up a whole new world. I realized that learning to play with an orchestra doesn't make you a good musician. Playing something off of a printed page, exactly the way the composer wanted it, leaves little room for a musician's artistry. Since then, I have learned how to improvise; play melody, rhythm, and chords simultaneously; play backup; and create "drive".
